In spite of the wonderful sight of rain outside the window, it's still a good idea to keep water conservation in mind. The issue of water shortages isn't going to go away.
An article in last week's New York Times Magazine (October 21, 2007) discussed some of the measures that Aurora, Colorado is considering to try to meet the conflicting demands of a growing population and diminishing water supply. In it, the water manager for the city, Peter Binney says "I would expect that what we're going to do is the blueprint for a lot of cities in California, Arizona, Nevada - even the Carolinas and the Gulf states. They're all going to be doing this in the future."
Also, here's a link to a recent Charlotte Observer story about Duke Energy's use of water from the river. An interesting side thought is that the less power we use, the less water is needed to generate that power.
